Gil, Villarreal Lead U-20s to World Cup
Jose Villarreal (LA) and Luis Gil (RSL) each scored today as the US Under 20 National Team defeated Canada and officially qualified for the U-20 World Cup this summer.
Villarreal now has three goals in the tournament. Gil has two, as well as a couple of assists.
Gil has seen substantial time in Major League Soccer already, starting in 33 matches and appearing in 54 for the Claret and Cobalt. Villarreal made 10 appearances last season with the Galaxy.
These two will presumably lead the squad this summer as they head to the U-20 World Cup in June and July. Their MLS sides will have to do without them for that period, but both Salt Lake and the Galaxy have been very supportive of their young upcoming stars.
Gil has been released by US Soccer for the remainder of the tournament and will be available for selection for Salt Lake this Sunday against the San Jose Earthquakes.
